Fall and Winter preview

Hello everybody I wanted to give a little preview as to what I will be doing for the rest of the year.

With Halloween approaching it will be time to start decorating the house with new props and “scary” structures! I am hoping to create a new hunted maze this year, if not I will build upon the façade from last year, along with creating new props for it all.

November I will be doing a larger format drawing(s) along with small format painting. The painting will be for the “Linda Hall Miniatures Exhibit” at the Whittier Art Gallery in December. The Drawing aren’t for any show in particular; I just have a few ideas for larger format drawing(s) that I want to do.

December will mainly be for preproduction for my next large format painting. And it is going to be all about space!

Along with all of this I will be doing more updates for the website and sketching post for the blog. Speaking of the blog, I will be posting updates for these projects when I can. I am all so trying to post content to the website every other day!

That’s all for now!

Best,

Sean

Making Painting 5

With this painting I was given a theme, trees. The problem with this is that lately I have been wanting to do another painting about space, namely of a planet. I was suck for some time trying to come up with an idea of mixing space and trees. After doing research I came across images of the big bang and the expansion of the universe. They showed this by having a starting paint, the big bang, and from there the expansion drew out in a cone shape. Inside the cone showed stars and galaxies. I quite enjoyed this imagery, not so much the cone shape itself, but of the emptiness of everything around the cone. After doing a few abstract and non-representational paintings, I wanted to make one with a lot of negative space and/or bare canvas. This would give me the opportunity to do this, along with a theme of space and trees. However, this would show the looseness of the main theme of the painting, tree.

I have to admit that this is not one of my best paintings. In fact, I almost scrapped the project because of how unfocused it is. This comes from not keeping close enough to the main theme of the project, the tree. The image of the expansion of the universe, to me, looked like the trunk of a tree. With this I created a ‘tree’ where one does not see the top (branches and leaves) of the tree or the bottom (roots) of the tree. However, one can see into the tree, the glowing heart of the tree. All around the tree is nothingness, as it is alone in the world.

How this relates to the expansion of the universe is that the heart of the tree is observable universe, and the nothingness around the tree showing that the universe is the only thing out there in space. With the top and bottom of the tree, the bottom shows that universe is still expanding, however someday it will end. Some theories suggest that the universe will collapse in on itself, known as the big crunch. Where the entire universe will collapse into itself to a single point in space. After this another big bang would happen, thus creating a new universe. This is where the top of the universe comes in. It was the previous universe.

Again, somewhat all over the place of the themes of the painting. Also to note, a better representation of the expansion of the universe would be that of an expanding balloon. I thought of doing that, showing an orange tree with the oranges showing a galaxy in it. However, I thought that would be too close of copy of the “Men in Black” marbles ending.

Update to the website.

I am cleaning up the website a bit to make it somewhat less cluttered. The main reworking that I am doing is combining the "home" page and the "about" page in to one new page, "Restless Dreams."

I am doing this to have a more focused experience while on the website.

For right now I am using the same format of the original "home' page, just now with the text from the old "about" page on top of the images.

In the relatively near future I will be writing a new about and/or artist statement for the page. Along with a new page format.

Also to note for the new update, I removed the "Restless Dreams" text at the bottom of the website. As now it is somewhat redundant to have.

Best,

Sean

End of Day One, Painting Five

The result of day one work for the new paining. Today was setting up the base of the painting to latter build up on.

After I am done with this project I will post a sort of "making of". Showing the process from the sketches to the final painting.

Web Site Update.

During the last few days I have been adding and trimming content on the website to give a better over all look at my body of work.  Here is a quick list of changes to the website.

  • The home page now has one image from each of the five types of art work on the website (paintings, craft works, drawings & sketchings, photography, and digital). This replaces the original homepage of just drawings. I did this to give a small primer of my work on the homepage.
  • I added new (properly cropped & marked) photos of my latest paintings.
  • Added and removed sketches from the Drawings & Sketchings page.
  • Removed some photos from the Photography page. This was done to clear up repetition of  photos.
  • Re-added Digital images.
  • Minor format spacing and text size/color changes throughout the website
  • Removed Google Plus link. The link was not working properly and I am not going to update the Google plus page any-longer.
  • Fixed issues with the Facebook page link .
  • Changed the Facebook and Twitter icons.

As for new content for the website, I will be adding more information to the About page and more frequent blog updates.

In regards of new art projects, I am working on a new painting with the theme of trees.

Best,

Sean
